Hello fellow painters and watercolor enthusiasts!
Below is a supply list for the class. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or curious about substitutions. I will be bringing extra of all of the supplies so if you forget something or can’t find something on the list please do not worry as I will have extras for you.
1. Watercolor paper
A pad of 4 x 6 postcard size paper. 140lb 15 sheets. We will be working small for our finished paintings so I like the size but you can bring any size and cut it down to what you are comfortable painting with. I found this watercolor pad at hobby lobby.
Plus, 10 to 20 sheets of practice watercolor paper, any size and any weight. The paper should be heavier than copy paper so that the water doesn’t float off of the paper.
2. Paint
Tube paints are available at Nevada Fine Art‘s, Michaels arts and crafts, and hobby lobby. Nine basic colors should work for you to get you started. I recommend a red, yellow, brown or yellow ocher, blue, green, orange, purple, white and black. I wouldn’t worry too much about the exact color name, just choose the intensity of each color that you like and you’ll be fine. I have plenty of colors for you to experiment with and will share. If you are new to this craft I would go with the cheapest tube colors you can find as you may change your mind and want to buy various shades of the colors for the next session.
Another option that is cheaper would be to go with the pan watercolor sets. Prang and Sargeant are good brands for Rich opaque, intense colors. And the price is reasonable. If you can’t find these at the stores I will bring four or five extra sets that you can purchase from me. They’re about $15. Again, feel free to reach out to me about paints if you are confused.
3. Brushes
There are three brushes that we will be using and practicing with. #1 is a script or rigger brush size 2. It has a long thin point and is skinny. #2 is a round brush size 1/2 inch or 12 mm. #3 is a flat brush and size is 1/2 inch or 12 MM. please do not spend a fortune on brushes until you practice with me and decide on what you like. If you have a question and are not sure, buy the cheapest one, knowing that you can go back and buy thousands of dollars worth of brushes later. If you don’t have time to look for brushes just bring a long pointy brush and a thicker fat brush that’s flat and you will be fine, especially for the first session.
4. Pallette
This is a personal item depending on how you paint. I like a larger pallet that is 10“ x 14“ with 20 small wells for color. Again, please do not spend a lot of money on a pallette until you practice with me and decide on your preferences. A large white platter will work just as well in a pinch.
5. Water container
A large half gallon or 1 quart plastic, recycled container is perfect. A container that is clear so that you can see the color of your water is even better. Two containers is helpful so that you can switch your water out easily. Glass mason jars are nice but they are heavy and cumbersome.
6. Kitchen sponges of various sizes and you only need small pieces of each.
7. Painters masking tape.
8. Salt. A small shaker or small baggie of 1 tablespoon of salt is fine.
9. Paper towels. Three or four sheets
of paper towels is fine. You don’t need to bring an entire roll.
10. Saran wrap. A 1 foot piece of saran wrap is all you need.
11. Pencil, scissors, box of crayons.
12. Playful attitude!
This is enough to get you started for the first session. Please reach out to me for any questions small or large and I’ll be happy to help. Calling me is best.
